Kerala is a state which takes its fairs and festivals very seriously. The locals are deeply devoted to their alluring festivals which tell some significant stories about their cultures, heritage and history. Snake boat races remain the most popular celebration in the state. There are also religious festivals, harvest festivals and temple festivals which bestow great fun and frolic to visitors.

Onam remains one of the biggest festivals of Kerala celebrating ten days of harvest. The grandeur of Onam starts with flower decorations followed by huge elephant processions, classical and folk music performances, cultural programs, carnivals, fireworks, and a lot more. Onam represents the rich culture and heritage sprawling here and remains the most colourful festival of Kerala.

This festival marks the astrological New Year of Kerala. It falls in the month of April and is considered as a fortunate day. The festival sees many vibrant rituals and customs with some popular ones like Vishukani, Vishukaineetam and Vishu pulari.

Thrissur Pooram
The Attukal Bhagavathy temple hosts the very popular Pongala Festival, one of the major religious festivals of Kerala celebrated in Trivandrum. This is a women festival which lasts for ten days. Lakhs of women partake in Thrissur Pooram where women cook rice porridge with jaggery and coconut to offer to the deity.

Cochin Carnival
The joyous Cochin Carnival is celebrated in the Kochi Fort. This grand feast takes you back into the history of Portuguese who used to welcome the New Year with lots of gaiety and zeal. Kochi Fort illuminates with thousands of lights and cheerfulness during the event where one can witness activities like Beach Bike Race, Sea Swimming, Beach Football and Beach Volleyball. Adorned Elephants remain major attractions during the carnival.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Boat races are extremely popular in Kerala and Nehru Trophy Boat Race remains the most popular one. This traditional boat race sees thousands of larger than life boats cruising through the majestic backwaters of Kerala. Thousands of spectators gather along the Punnamda Lake in Alappuzha to witness this grand race where hundreds of rowers row beautifully decked up boats.

Aranmula Boat Race
The boat race in Aranmula is hosted on the River Pampa where over 4 helmsmen, 100 oarsmen and 25 singers participate. The race brings lots of joy and excitement. Spotting these giant boats running over water and spectators singing and dancing along the river bank is a beautiful experience.
