Kerala is not just about pristine beaches, backwater cruises and Ayurveda therapy. This God’s Own Country has exceptional wildlife which thrills you and takes you into the exciting world of wild. The state is home to fourteen wildlife sanctuaries and two tiger reserves apart from six national parks acting home to some endangered species. Rich topography of Kerala supports numerous wild animals and gives them an ideal house to lead a peaceful and happy life.  

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as “Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary”, remains an ultimate wildlife in Kerala.  Sprawling over an area of 675 sq. km, the sanctuary is blessed with a rich collection of flora and fauna like Malabar Giant Squirrel, flying squirrel and lion tailed Macaques. Here you can enjoy trekking, elephant rides and boating at the Periyar Lake.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is in the Palakkad district of Kerala. Here you can spot four native tribes who have settled here inside the sanctuary. The place treats you with amazing sights of nature and over 39 species of mammals, 16 species of amphibians, 268 varieties of birds, 61 species of reptiles, and much more.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Nestled between two rivers Cheruthoni and Periyar, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is blanketed with thick cover of evergreen forests which act home to a range of wildlife.  Travellers can partake in boat rides in the rivers to enjoy the nature around. Some of the commonly seen animals here include Sambhars, Wild Dogs, Jungle Cats and Tigers.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary has a sharp scrub forest which receives heavy rainfall. Thus, you can spot some unique vegetation here. The sanctuary enthrals tourists with its beautiful vistas of nature, including sandalwood forests, cascading waterfalls, etc. Here you can relish nature walks, trekking as well as camping.  

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
This Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Wayanad, Kerala. Here you can spot Indian bison, elephant, deer and tiger. The sanctuary was established in 1973 and today it acts home to a range of wild animals like tigers, leopards, elephants, wild dogs, civets, bears, etc.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for bird watchers. It is a heaven of nature, including mangrove forests, green paddy fields and coconut groves. Here you can spot colourful migratory birds apart from local birds like waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, moorhen, etc. The sanctuary can be accessed by road as well as boat.
