Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, is among the most popular bird watching spots in the country. Situated in Kottayam taluk of Kottayam district, on the banks of Vembanad Lake, the sanctuary is a favourite haunt of migratory birds. The main attractions of local bird found in Kumarakom include owl, moorhen, cuckoo, brahminy kite, teal, flycatcher, lark, darter, cormorant, egret, waterfowl, heron along with migratory bird called Siberian crane.

The major reason that attracts tourists to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is that many migratory birds from the Himalayas and from as far as Siberia fly to Kumarakom during the migratory season. The ideal time to enjoy a serene bird watching session is during sunrise. This is the time when the birds leave their nest and fly over in search of food and water.

The Bird Sanctuary is famed for sheltering a diverse variety of birds, both migratory and native. These birds fly down to the area during the winters to seek shelter from the harsh cold climatic conditions. Visitors can also enjoy an enchanting boat ride on the Vembanad Lake.

The surroundings of the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary offer a perfect chance to indulge in a long nature walk along with indulging in a bird watching session. If you are fortunate enough, you may even get a chance to spot a new species of bird which is still to be featured in the long list birds that are found in this area.

Best time to visit
The best time to visit this magnificent bird sanctuary is during June to August and for those heading here to satiate their quest to visit migratory birds then plan a trip around November to February.

How to reach
By Boat - You can opt to reach here via boats, including houseboats and motorboats. You can also enjoy cruising on Lake Vembanad, and watch several local and migratory birds at the same time.

By Road - You can also reach the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary via road, by either hiring a taxi or driving your own vehicle. If you're driving over from Kottayam, you can take the Kottayam- Kumarakom Road and SH42.
