Saraswati Temple

Carrying the old world charm in its beauty, the Saraswati Temple of Hampi is an ancient temple attracting tourists from around the world. Situated in the district of Bellary in Hampi, the temple is mostly in ruins. The shrine, sanctum, canopy and the pavilions are better in condition than the rest of the structure. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, who is the goddess of intelligence, understanding, knowledge and wisdom.

Attractive carvings can still be seen on the pillars of the temple. Although the figures on the tower of the temple are damaged, but the crawling baby Krishna’s stucco image can still be seen on it.

Temple Architecture
Built during the 13th century in Vijayanagar style, the temple is located nearby an octagonal bath in the midst of the ruins. The art and architecture of the temple can be observed better if the visitors walk towards the path between the canal and the temple.

The chief deity of the temple, Goddess Saraswati, has four hands. One hand has a book that represents the Vedas; one has prayer beads of pearl that signify spirituality; one holds a pot containing holy water and another one has a musical instrument Veena epitomizing fine art.

There is a rock near the temple that attracts visitors for it has image of the goddess carved on it. Around this rock, there is a shrine which is painted with beautiful bright colours. This signifies that the temple was built to honour the goddess.
