Kanchipuram Silk Saree

South India’s answer to Banarasi Saree and the first choice of a bride or would be bride; the silk takes its name from the village of Kanchipuram.  They are weaved with bold colours using golden thread and have broad borders; mostly worn with heavy blouses. Each and every part of a Kanchipuram Saree is distinctive in its own way. A bride of South India would like to wear this saree with heavy gold jewellery and other fashion accessories.

Origin of Kanchipuram Saree
As per legend, the silk weavers of this sari are believed to be descendents of Rishi Markanda. This famous sage was also the master weaver of the Gods in heaven. This saree weaving tradition in Kanjeevaram, though is 4 centuries old and flourished during the Vijaynagara Empire. The weaver communities of Devangas and Saligars were famous for their weaving skills, thus making this saree synonymous to South India. It is arguably one of the finest quality of silk sarees, weaved from the purest form of mulberry silk thread.

Colours and Motifs
Kanchipuram sarees are famous for their lively colours and designs strictly adhere to the temple scriptures and figurinesPallu differs from rest of the saree in colour, design and contrasting shades. Motifs play an important role in a typical Kanchipuram saree. They depict the temple figurines and also scenes from various mythologies. The border comprises of motifs of various palaces, temples and floral patterns.

Varieties Available
Kanchipuram silk sarees earlier used to be a nine-yard weave, but nowadays they have reduced to six-yard weave. Original golden and silver zari has been replaced by copper zari which makes it cost friendly. Hence, while buying one needs to make sure that the zari work is not artificial. One can choose from:
