Wildlife of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is as admired for its flora and fauna as it is for its majestic temples and scenic hill stations. The region boasts of some of the popular wildlife sanctuaries such as, the Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, Mundanthurai Tiger Sanctuary, Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary, Kunthakulam Bird Sanctuary, Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, Viralimalai Sanctuary and Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary.

Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park
Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park is one of the must see locations of Tamil Nadu. The Park is located in the Tuticorin and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu. The Park will lighten up your senses with breathtaking glimpses of Dolphins, Turtles, Balano-Glossus, and many other fascinating marine species. If you are fortunate enough to steal a glimpse of the dolphin, it is truly a sight to behold. Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park is the first Marine Biosphere Reserve in South East Asia.

Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the famous wildlife Sanctuaries of Tamil Nadu. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Some of the inhabitants of the Sanctuary are Tiger, Nilgiri Tahr, Gaur, Panther, Elephant, Wild Boar, Civet Cat, Jackal and Deer. A wide variety of the avian species like Black headed oriole, racket-tailed drongo, paradise catcher, rose-winged parakeet, Black Eagle, Rutus woodpecker, great Indian Malabar pied hornbill and fairy bluebird are also found in this wildlife sanctuary.

Best time to visit - The Sanctuary can be visited throughout the year except February to April.

Anna Zoological Park
Anna Zoological Park is home to more than 170 wildlife species. Some of the prominent animals in the Park are Tiger, Hyena, Jagur, Elephant, Camel, Wolf, Panther, Hog Deer, Baboon, Otter, Black Buck, Camel, Nilgai, and Lion-Tailed Macaque. The Park was the first public Zoo in India. It is also known as the Vandalur Zoo and has a library stocked with numerous books on wildlife. The Park is open on all days, except Tuesdays. Elephant Safari is one of the attractions of the Park.

Guindy National Park
Guindy National Park, located in the city of Chennai makes for the perfect tourist’s heaven with its magnificent wildlife and natural beauty. The National Park is home to 14 species of mammals such as Spotted Deer, Black Buck, Chital, Jackal, Large Indian Civet, Hyena, Fox, Jungle Cat and Antelope. The Park is also a paradise for its flora with over 350 species, including Climbers, Shrubs, Herbs, and Grass. The beauty of the Park lies in its dense forest, grasslands and water bodies. Guindy is also home to many birds such as Parrot, Pheasants, Quail, Black-Winged Kite, Partridges, Paradise Fly-Catcher, Honey Buzzard and Pariah Kite. It is also a paradise for the migratory birds like Teals, Pochards, Medium Egrets, Pond Herons and Open-Billed Storks.

Kunthakulam Bird Sanctuary
Kunthakulam Bird Sanctuary is nestled in Nanguneri taluk, Tamil Nadu. The natural forests of this Bird Sanctuary have various ponds which will make your bird sighting experience all the more delightful.  With the arrival of the winter season, the Bird Sanctuary comes alive with migratory birds. The migratory birds fly in from various countries such as Sri Lanka, USA, Myanmar, and Australia. This is one of the sanctuaries of India, which attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year.

Best time to visit - The best time to visit the Bird Sanctuary is during the winters.
