Gandhi Memorial

Mahatma Gandhi Memorial of Kanyakumari is one of the popular tourist destinations. Constructed in the year 1956, the memorial was built in the memory of Indian leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, famed as Father of the Nation. The memorial was built on the seashore, near to Kumari Amman Temple where his ashes were kept for public darshan before immersion in the sea on February 12, 1948.

After the tragic assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1948, his remains were sent to various parts of the country as part of his last riot. One such place was the town of Kanyakumari. After the ashes were removed, a memorial was built on the site.

The architecture of the memorial is similar to that of Hindu shrines of central India, that’s why many refer to it as Gandhi Mandapam. The central area of the building has been built in a way that stands 79 feet high, symbolizing the age of Mahatma Gandhi. A unique fact about this memorial is that it is constructed in such a manner that on the day of Gandhi's birthday (2nd October), the sunrays pass through a hole and fall exactly on the point, where his ashes were kept.

The Memorial houses special meeting rooms for organizing meetings. A film show is also organized that exhibit the achievements of Mahatma Gandhi and his encouraging words for the common man. Proudly upholding the rich cultural heritage of India, the Gandhi Memorial offers a clear picture of the teachings, philosophy, ideal and services rendered by Mahatma Gandhi for the country.

The roof of the memorial gives a beautiful panoramic view of the ocean around.
