Golconda Fort

 

Golkonda, also known with the name of Gol konda, is an exceptional exemplar of unmatched engineering and magical architecture of Hyderabad. This grand fort houses eight gates and 87 bastions which make many jaws drop out of fascination. A tour to Hyderabad city remains incomplete without visiting this fort.

History
Golkonda Fort was first raised by the Kakatiyas as a defense from outside attacks. It stands on a granite hill 120 meters high and is nestling with massive battlements. Rani Rudrama Devi and her successor Prataparudra rebuilt the fort complex to further strengthen it. The Golkonda Fort was the place where once the well-known Koh-i-Noor and Hope diamonds were stored. Some of the major dynasties which ruled the Golkonda Fort in the past include Kakatiya Kings, Musunuri Nayaks, Bahamani Sultans, Qutb Shahi dynasty and Mughal Empire.

Structure
The fort features 15 to 18 foot high walls which look massive in their outlook. It has huge gates with iron spikes to protect the fort from Elephants attacks. Travelers visiting here get to see its remarkable structure which includes grand pavilions, embellished gates, royal entrances, and big domes. The fort is categorized into four district forts. It is encircled with well manicured gardens oozing heart pleasing fragrances.  The fort remains one of the most magnificent fortresses in India and showcases the richness of Indian history in a perfect manner.

Special Attraction
The fort hosts a charismatic Sound & Light Show underlining stories about its history and facts. It is performed in three languages namely English, Hindi and Telugu.
Show Timings (November to February): 1st Show - 6:30pm and 2nd Show - 7.45pm
Show Timings (March to October): 1st Show - 7:00pm and 2nd Show - 8.15pm.

How to Reach
Golconda fort is at a distance of around 11 km from the city of Hyderabad and is easily accessible by road.
