Borra Caves
Situated in the Ananthagiri Hills of the Araku Valley, the Borra Caves are the deepest caves in the country. The place was discovered by the British Geologist William King in the year 1807. The enchanting caves are surrounded by semi-evergreen moist deciduous forests, and are located at a height of 800 to 1300m. One of the most striking attractions of the caves is its formation of Stalagmites and Stalactites. The different formations of the caves are given different names such as the Shiv-Paravathi, Mother-Child, Human Brain, Crocodile, Tiger and Cows, depending on their shapes.
These caves also hold religious importance. Located deep inside the caves is the Shivalinga and the idol of the holy cow Kamadenu. The Borra caves got their name from a formation inside the caves which looks like the human brain, which in Telugu language is known as borra.
